Environment Minister Anil Dave passes away: PM Narendra Modi expresses ‘shock’, condoles death

Dave had not been keeping well for the last few months. He complained of uneasiness at his home this morning and was rushed to AIIMS where he passed away, official sources told PTI.

The minister was in meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as late as last night, the latter tweeted, calling him "a devoted public servant". Several Central and state politicians also expressed their condolences

"I was with Anil Madhav Dave ji till late last evening, discussing key policy issues. This demise is a personal loss," the PM said. "Anil Madhav Dave ji will be remembered as a devoted public servant. He was tremendously passionate towards conserving the environment," the PM added.

Dave took charge as Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Independent Charge), in New Delhi on July 6, 2016. He hailed from Madhya Pradesh.

The minister was elected to the Rajya Sabha in August 2009. At the time, he was appointed member, Committee on Water Resources. He was also on the consultative committee for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. From March to June 2010, Dave was a member of the Parliamentary Forum on Global Warming and Climate Change.

Dave is the second Union minister of the Modi government to have died in office. Gopinath Munde died in a car accident in 2014.
